Tablecloth in Progress

 • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 6:41 PM

This is a work in progress. I've been looking for a crochet thread tablecloth project. I decided i liked this pattern for place mats even though it was for yarn and not thread. As i worked it i made a decision to keep on going and make my long-awaited-for-tablecloth. It will be a while until i am done but it will be lovely, i think.

It is a new stitch for me and very no-brainer crochet for stress relief.
The loopy stitches in the center few rings are done with a (sc, 4 ch, sc) in the same loop that i increased to a sc, 6ch, sc for the outer and subsequent rings.

The solid rings are done with a dc that i increased to a treble.

As i go i will increase to a 8 ch for the loopy stitches and a double treble.

Right now the project stands at 19inches by 22 inches.
This has been a great summer project so far. :-)

I finally got my Ravelry invite, and am brand new. Which, of course, means I spend most of my free time (other than crocheting) staring at all the wonders of this new website.

I found this beautiful blanket by Kathy Merrick. I see a lot of users have created it, and I looked at the difficulty rating. BUT, I was wondering for some first hand accounts if anyone here has made the babette blanket. I really think it's gorgeous, and love how gypsy it looks. Anyone care to share their experience in making it? Or attempting to make it? I've never made a real blanket before, only a huge afghan of only dc throughout with shell border. That's it. Other than that, I'm a doll maker, lol.

Thanks!!

Edit: Sorry for forgetting to give you guys my name! I'm "BlueWings" on Ravelry and will be adding you guys within seconds of this edit :)

I actually wrote down the pattern this time. I can't belive I managed to write my own pattern. This probably sounds lame, but I have always wanted a nice big collection of pattern that I could sell or maybe even put in my own crochet book. I guess I can say I have one down :)

Felting.. HUH?

 • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 7:18 PM
After a feeble attempt at Googling "how to felt a crochet project" I'm still a bit muffled with the idea. Do you buy anything special to make it felted, or does just washing it make it fuzzy and felted? I'm very confused.

felting question

I am making a cloth diaper cover right now with Lion Brand wool... it is striped white and dark teal.

If I felt it (just in the washing machine with hot water), will the teal stain the white? I didn't think about this in advance... in fact I decided I didn't want to felt it so I started making it the "right" size but it actually looks like its going to be too big.

Last thing I want to post, I promise! Some of you may have seen this over in [info]t_shirt_surgery, but I used one of the tutorials posted here a while back to make keyholes. Old entry with tutorial.

They're kind of big pictures )

239: A Vow

“A Vow”
Allen Ginsberg

I will haunt these States
with beard bald head
eyes staring out plane window
hair hanging out in Greyhound bus midnight
leaning over taxicab seat to admonish
an angry cursing driver
hand lifted to calm
his outraged vehicle
that I pass with the Green Light of common law.

Common sense, Common law, common tenderness
and common tranquility
our means in America to control the money munching
war machine, bright lit industry
everywhere digesting forests & excreting soft pyramids
of newsprint, Redwood and Ponderosa patriarchs
silent in Meditation murdered & regurgitated as smoke,
sawdust, screaming ceilings of Soap Opera,
thick dead Lifes, slick Advertisements
for Gubernatorial big guns
burping Napalm on palm rice tropic greenery.

Dynamite in forests,
boughs fly slow motion
thunder down ravine,
Helicopters roar over National Park, Mekong swamp,
Dynamite fire blasts thru Model Villages,
Violence screams at Police, Mayors get mad over radio,
Drop the Bomb on Niggers!
drop Fire on the gook China
Frankenstein Dragon
waving its tail over Bayonne's domed Aluminium oil reservoir!

I'll haunt these states all year
gazing bleakly out train windows, blue airfield
red TV network on evening plains,
decoding radar Provincial editorial paper message,
deciphering Iron Pipe laborer's curses as
clanging hammers they raise steamshovel claws
over Puerto Rican agony lawyers screams in slums.

Eco-friendly mailing and packaging

 • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 6:36 AM
Moving towards more green behavior and habits has been a major trend for me in the last few years. I'm currently living in a condo where we have no recycling set up (it's hard enough trying to keep up with trash disposal). I'm not sure if recycling is even set up for this area. Bummer, I know. Here are some ideas (successfully used in some cases, only ideas in other cases) for more environmentally friendly shipping, mailing, etc. habits.

* Reuse boxes from previous mail arrivals or purchased products
* 12 can soda packs stuffed with crinkled up paper inside of another box was a safe way of getting a narrow glass platter in the mail.
* Shred junk mail and fliers to use in place of packing peanuts
* Unsalted, unbuttered popcorn makes for good packing material (you could feed ducks afterwards or something)
* During a friend's recent move (it was a short distance where movers weren't hired), we wrapped all of her glasses, bowls, and plates in a few layers of old plastic bags she had laying around. She's going to recycle them once they're all unpacked.
* You could also use dish towels/kitchen rags as cushioning for dishes
* On moving again - hit up the grocery store and other retail locations. Sometimes they have intact boxes you can take home to pack (saving money AND landfill space)
* I worked retail where we received boxes filled with packing peanuts all the time. We filled garbage bags FULL of them and dropped them off at a Pak Mail around the corner (or some other mailing place) and they reused them instead of us throwing them away.

Any other creative ways to mail, pack, and move?

Yeah.... she's supposed to be LionBrand's pattern for the heartfelt bear, but I wanted a doll instead.
